By the way a while ago I said I don’t believe Banana Fish was translated wrong in the way online fandom likes to claim (the US release is censored and if you read the original you’d see my interpretation is correct and yours is wrong omg!!!!!!!) but I just remembered that there was a translation error in it that really annoyed me decades ago when I picked up a few volumes of the Pulp edition just to support it.

There’s a character early on in BF called オーサー (o-sa-), and they had dared to translated his name as… wait for it… ARTHUR!!!!!!!

I assume because Yoshida named the character after Brian Orser (Canadian figure skater) but the translater had never heard of him.

I wonder if this super critical error ever got corrected?

I don’t think it’s an error but rather an adaptation and then an arrangement between Pulp translator and Shogakukan. オーサー is also Arthur in the French edition and in the Italian edition. I think back in the 90s / early 00s the guidelines for tranlation were more about adaptation rather than about staying true to the original content. “Arthur” complete name is Frederick “Arthur” but he’s never called Frederick, thus “Arthur” has his first name and instead of Orser because Orser is not really a first name. Also, BF came out in the US before coming out in Europe so maybe the name Arthur was okay with Shogakukan and when they arranged the translations with the european teams, they kept Arthur because it would make sense to have the same name in the west (us or europe).
